Edward Kenway is the pirate who becomes an Assassin in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
The game is set mainly in the Caribbean during the early 18th-century Golden Age of Piracy. Edward begins as a Welsh privateer seeking wealth and status, but he becomes entangled in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars after taking the identity of another man. His travels include Nassau, Havana, Kingston, and numerous islands.
Edward commands the ship Jackdaw, making naval exploration and combat central features of the game. His crew includes the pirate Anne Bonny, while historical figures such as Blackbeard and Benjamin Hornigold also appear. The story follows Edward's gradual change from self-interested pirate to committed Assassin.
Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. Those family connections link Black Flag to the earlier colonial storyline.
