The main setting of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is the Caribbean.
The game follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with both the Assassins and the Templars during the Golden Age of Piracy. Its open world includes islands and coastal settlements based on real Caribbean locations, including Havana, Nassau, and Kingston. Naval travel and ship combat are major parts of the experience.
Black Flag is set primarily in the early eighteenth century, when piracy, European colonial rivalry, and maritime trade shaped the region. Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw, allows players to explore the Caribbean between missions and engage other vessels.
The game is sometimes described simply as a pirate game, but its story remains part of Assassin’s Creed’s larger conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order. Its modern-day sections also connect the historical adventure to the fictional Abstergo company.
