The playable pirate Assassin in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is Edward Kenway.
Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with the Assassin-Templar conflict during the Golden Age of Piracy. The game is set mainly in the Caribbean in the early eighteenth century, where Edward sails the Jackdaw and encounters historical pirates including Blackbeard, Benjamin Hornigold, and Anne Bonny.
Edward is also part of the wider Kenway family. His son, Haytham Kenway, is a central character in Assassin's Creed III, while his grandson, Ratonhnhaké:ton, is that game's principal Assassin. Those family connections can make the names easy to mix up.
Black Flag was released in 2013 and combines open-world exploration, naval combat, island settlements, and the series' traditional stealth missions. Edward begins motivated largely by personal ambition and wealth, but his experiences gradually change his understanding of the Assassins and their ideals.
