In Assassin's Creed II, which Italian nobleman becomes the game's main playable Assassin?

The story behind the answer

The main playable Assassin in Assassin's Creed II is the Italian nobleman Ezio Auditore.

Ezio is introduced as a young Florentine nobleman in Renaissance Italy. After a conspiracy destroys much of his family, he begins a personal quest for justice that develops into a broader conflict with the Templar Order. Over the course of the game, he learns Assassin techniques, builds alliances, and becomes a major Brotherhood leader.

Assassin's Creed II was released in 2009 and is set primarily across Italian locations including Florence, Venice, and Monteriggioni. The story uses real historical figures, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Lorenzo de' Medici, but Ezio himself is fictional. His family name, Auditore, is therefore not the name of a documented Renaissance dynasty in the same sense as the Medici.

Ezio later returns as the protagonist of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed Revelations. His three-game character arc made him one of the franchise's best-known figures and helped establish the series' tradition of following one Assassin across different periods of life.
