In Assassin's Creed II, which Italian nobleman becomes an Assassin after his family is betrayed?

The story behind the answer

Ezio Auditore is the Italian nobleman who becomes an Assassin in Assassin's Creed II after his family is betrayed.

Ezio begins the game as a young Florentine nobleman in Renaissance Italy. A conspiracy leads to the execution of his father and brothers, forcing Ezio to flee Florence and seek help from allies connected to the Assassin Order. His personal quest gradually develops into a wider struggle against the Templars.

Assassin's Creed II follows Ezio across several Italian locations, including Florence, Monteriggioni, Venice and Forlì. The story spans many years, allowing players to see his growth from an inexperienced young man into a skilled Mentor.

Ezio is not the protagonist of only one game. His story continues in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, creating the series' best-known character trilogy. He is distinct from Altaïr, whose medieval Levant adventure appears in the first game.
