In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore visits Monteriggioni after leaving Florence.
Monteriggioni is a fortified hill town in Tuscany and serves as the Auditore family's refuge. Ezio's uncle Mario owns Villa Auditore there, and the estate becomes an important base during the story. The town's walls, towers, and central villa are among the game's most recognizable locations.
The game begins in Florence, where Ezio's family is caught in a political conspiracy. After the family's execution, Ezio travels with his mother and sister to Monteriggioni, where Mario explains the Auditore connection to the Assassin Brotherhood. The settlement later develops through the game's economic renovation system.
Monteriggioni is sometimes confused with Venice because Venice is one of Assassin's Creed II's largest later settings. Forlì is another Italian location visited by Ezio, but it is not the first refuge he reaches after Florence.
