In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore's family villa is located at Monteriggioni. The fortified Tuscan town becomes Ezio's main base after he leaves Florence and travels with his uncle Mario Auditore.
Monteriggioni is a real medieval hill town in Tuscany, near Siena. In the game, the Villa Auditore serves as a headquarters where Ezio can upgrade buildings, display collected items, and return between missions. Its strategic position also reflects the importance of fortified settlements in Renaissance Italy.
The villa should not be confused with Ezio's birthplace in Florence or with Venice, where much of the game's later story occurs. Monteriggioni also appears in later entries, including Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, where it is attacked during the opening sequence.
The real Monteriggioni was founded in the early thirteenth century by the Republic of Siena as a defensive outpost against Florence. Its surviving walls and towers helped inspire the game's depiction of the settlement.
