In Assassin’s Creed II, which historical inventor helps Ezio Auditore by creating devices for him?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci helps Ezio Auditore by creating devices for him in Assassin’s Creed II.

Leonardo is introduced as a friend and technical ally of Ezio. He studies pages from the Codex left by Altaïr and uses his engineering knowledge to interpret their designs. His work gives Ezio access to equipment such as the hidden-blade improvements and other specialized tools.

The game presents Leonardo as a fictionalized participant in Ezio’s story while retaining his real identity as a Renaissance artist, engineer, and inventor. His workshop also helps represent the intellectual and artistic culture of fifteenth-century Italy.

Leonardo is not the same character as Niccolò Machiavelli, who becomes an important Assassin ally and political adviser. Michelangelo, another major Renaissance name, does not fill Leonardo’s technical role in the game.
