In Assassin’s Creed II, which Florentine nobleman becomes the game’s central Assassin?

The story behind the answer

Ezio Auditore da Firenze is the central Assassin in Assassin’s Creed II.

The game begins in Florence in 1476, where Ezio is introduced as a young nobleman. After his father and brothers are executed as part of a Templar conspiracy, Ezio joins the Assassin Brotherhood and seeks justice across Renaissance Italy.

His journey takes him to Florence, Monteriggioni, Venice and the Vatican. Historical figures including Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo de’ Medici and Rodrigo Borgia appear alongside him, but Ezio remains a fictional character. The game ends in 1499, while later stories follow him in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

A common mix-up is confusing Ezio with Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, the protagonist of the 2007 original game. Ezio is also not the same person as Federico Auditore, his older brother, who appears briefly at the beginning.
