Italy is the primary country setting for Ezio's story in Assassin's Creed II.
The game follows Ezio Auditore da Firenze across several Italian locations during the Renaissance. Important settings include Florence, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Forlì, Venice, and the Vatican area of Rome. These places connect the personal story of Ezio's family to the wider Assassin–Templar conflict.
The setting is historical fiction rather than a literal reconstruction of every event. Real figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo de' Medici, and Rodrigo Borgia appear alongside fictional characters and missions. Leonardo's inventions also provide Ezio with equipment and mission assistance.
Assassin's Creed II was released in 2009 and expanded substantially on the original game's systems. Although later chapters move the series to other countries, this Italian Renaissance journey remains the defining setting of Ezio's first main adventure.
