In Assassin's Creed II, Florence contains the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore visited by Ezio.
Florence is one of the principal Italian cities in Ezio Auditore da Firenze's story. The game recreates recognizable landmarks from Renaissance Florence, including the cathedral commonly called the Duomo. Its enormous dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, is a prominent part of the city's skyline and gives the player a major climbing and navigation landmark.
The Florence sequences establish Ezio's family, introduce the political world of Renaissance Italy, and begin his transformation from nobleman to Assassin. The city is especially important in the opening chapters before the story expands to other locations.
Venice is another major city in Assassin's Creed II and contains many of the game's later missions, which makes it a common mix-up. Forlì and San Gimignano are also represented in the game, but the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore is Florence's defining cathedral. The historical building's famous dome was completed in the 15th century, matching the game's Renaissance setting.
