In Assassin's Creed II, which Assassin does the player control throughout the main Renaissance storyline?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed II follows Ezio Auditore da Firenze throughout its main Renaissance storyline.

Ezio begins the game as a young Florentine nobleman in 1476. After his family is caught in a political conspiracy and his father and brothers are executed, Ezio is drawn into the Assassin Brotherhood. His story takes him through Florence, Monteriggioni, Venice, and the Vatican before the central conflict reaches its conclusion.

Ezio is not the protagonist of the first Assassin's Creed, which focuses on Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. He also appears in the later games Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, forming a connected trilogy about his life. The character became one of the series' most recognizable figures because the games show his development from an inexperienced young man into a senior Assassin.
