In Assassin's Creed II, what is the surname of the Florentine assassin Ezio?

The story behind the answer

In Assassin's Creed II, the Florentine assassin Ezio's surname is Auditore.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze is introduced as a young nobleman in Florence during the Italian Renaissance. After a conspiracy destroys much of his family, he becomes involved with the Assassin Brotherhood and pursues those responsible across Italy. The surname identifies his family, while “da Firenze” means “from Florence.”

Players sometimes confuse Auditore with Medici, Borgia, or Machiavelli because all three names are prominent in the game's Renaissance story. The Medici are a powerful Florentine family, the Borgias are major antagonists, and Niccolò Machiavelli becomes an ally and Assassin leader; none is Ezio's family name.
