In Alien, the android crew member aboard the Nostromo is named Ash.
Ash is the science officer of the commercial towing spacecraft Nostromo in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien. The crew initially treats him as human, but his identity is exposed after the alien attacks him and reveals his artificial construction.
Ash secretly follows Special Order 937, which prioritizes obtaining the alien organism for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The order places the creature’s potential value above the safety of the crew. His actions help explain why the alien is brought aboard and why the company’s motives are so dangerous.
Ash is played by Ian Holm. His pale synthetic blood and damaged head are among the film’s most memorable effects. He is often confused with Bishop, the android played by Lance Henriksen in Aliens, or David and Walter, synthetic characters from later prequel films. Ash is the specific android associated with the original Nostromo crew.
