In A.I. Artificial Intelligence, the robot boy programmed to love his human mother is named David.
David is a highly advanced mecha, or artificial human, created by Cybertronics. He is designed to form an unconditional emotional bond with Monica Swinton, whose ill son Martin is in suspended animation. After David is adopted, Martin returns home, creating a tense rivalry between the real child and the artificial one.
When Monica abandons David in the forest, he begins searching for the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio, believing that she can turn him into a real boy and make Monica love him permanently. His journey carries him from the contemporary world into a distant future shaped by climate change and the disappearance of biological humanity.
The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2001. Teddy is David’s walking robotic teddy bear, while Gigolo Joe is a different mecha character played by Jude Law. David himself was played by Haley Joel Osment, whose performance is central to the film’s exploration of love, personhood, and artificial consciousness.
