In A.I. Artificial Intelligence, the childlike mecha adopted by Monica Swinton is David.
David is a robotic child designed to love a human parent unconditionally in Steven Spielberg’s 2001 film A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Monica adopts him while her biological son Martin is in suspended care, but David’s presence becomes complicated after Martin returns home. David then begins a quest to become a real boy, hoping that the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio can change him.
Haley Joel Osment plays David, whose appearance and behavior are deliberately designed to resemble a young human child. His emotional responses raise the film’s central questions about programmed love, parental attachment, artificial consciousness, and whether a machine’s feelings can be treated as genuine.
David travels with Teddy, a robotic supertoy, and later encounters Gigolo Joe, a male mecha played by Jude Law. Those characters are companions, not alternative names for David. The film was developed from Brian Aldiss’s short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long,” with Stanley Kubrick involved in its earlier development.
