A waltz often opens the formal reception at a traditional quinceañera.
The honoree may perform a choreographed waltz with members of her court, family members, or another group of chosen partners. This formal dance gives the reception a presentation moment and creates one of the event’s most rehearsed and photographed sequences. In many celebrations, it is followed by livelier dances and general dancing.
The waltz is not the only dance associated with a quinceañera. Families may include regional dances, popular music, salsa, merengue, cumbia, or a surprise routine. The formal opening also differs by community: some celebrations begin with an entrance, a toast, dinner, or a religious ceremony. Thus, waltz describes a widespread tradition rather than a compulsory program item.
