A waltz is the traditional dance performed by a quinceañera and her court.
The dance usually takes place during the reception after the religious ceremony, meal, or formal entrance. The quinceañera may dance with her father first and then with members of her court, often called chambelanes and damas. In many celebrations, the group rehearses a choreographed waltz for weeks or months.
The waltz tradition reflects the formal European-style dances that influenced elite Latin American celebrations. It does not mean every quinceañera uses only classical music: many families add a modern choreographed dance, sometimes called a surprise dance, after the formal waltz.
A common mix-up is treating the waltz as a required religious ritual. It is a reception custom, and families adapt or omit it depending on culture, budget, venue, and personal preference.
