A ball gown is traditionally worn as the quinceañera’s main formal outfit.
The dress is one of the most recognizable visual features of the celebration. It is usually a formal, full-length gown selected especially for the honoree. Depending on family preference and local fashion, it may include a fitted bodice, a full skirt, embroidery, beading, or coordinated accessories.
The gown is sometimes compared with a wedding dress because both can be elaborate and ceremonial. They serve different purposes, however: a quinceañera dress marks a fifteenth-birthday coming-of-age celebration, not a marriage. White is not required, and modern honorees may choose many colors and styles.
Other clothing rituals may accompany the dress, including a ceremonial change from flat shoes to high heels. That custom is separate from the garment itself and is not included in every celebration.
