In a traditional Polish wedding welcome, bread and salt symbolize hospitality and prosperity for the newlyweds.
The couple is commonly greeted with bread and salt after the ceremony or on arrival at the reception. Bread represents the hope that the household will never lack food, while salt traditionally represents life’s difficulties and the strength needed to face them together. In some versions, the couple also receives a glass of water or vodka, adding a toast to the welcome.
The custom belongs to a wider Polish tradition of treating bread as a sign of respect, abundance, and family continuity. Salt has similarly long been valued as a preservative and as a symbol of endurance. Practices vary between regions and families, so the precise words and order may differ.
This welcome is not the same as the Polish “oczepiny” ceremony, a later reception ritual involving the bride’s transition from maidenhood to married life.
