In a traditional Persian wedding ceremony, the sweet substance the couple may taste from each other’s fingertips is honey.
During the Persian wedding ceremony, or aghd, the bride and groom may dip a finger into honey and feed it to one another. The gesture expresses the wish that their married life will be sweet and harmonious. It is one element of a larger ceremonial setting known as the sofreh-ye aghd.
The sofreh may display symbolic objects such as mirrors, candles, decorated eggs, nuts, fruits, and sweets. Their exact arrangement and interpretation vary among Iranian families and communities. The honey gesture is therefore a custom within Persian wedding practice, not a mandatory part of every ceremony.
Honey is sometimes confused with rosewater because rosewater may also appear in Persian celebrations and cuisine. The mirror on the wedding spread is a separate symbol, traditionally associated with light and the couple’s future.
