In a traditional Hindu wedding, what element is treated as the divine witness to the couple’s vows?

The story behind the answer

In a traditional Hindu wedding, Agni, the sacred fire, is treated as the divine witness to the couple’s vows.

Agni is the Vedic fire deity and occupies a central place in many Hindu marriage ceremonies. The couple may circle the fire or take ritual steps near it while making promises. Because fire is visible, purifying, and associated with offerings to the divine, it serves as a powerful witness to the marriage.

The best-known rite connected with the fire is saptapadi, the seven steps. Depending on regional tradition, other ceremonies may include offerings, recitations, garland exchange, and the tying of a marriage necklace. Hindu weddings are not uniform: customs differ by language, community, sect, and family practice.

Agni is therefore not the name of the ceremony or the wedding priest. The priest guides the rites, while Agni represents the sacred presence witnessing them.
