In a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony, the ritual of the couple taking seven steps together is called Saptapadi.
The Sanskrit name means “seven steps.” The bride and groom move around a sacred fire or take seven steps in a prescribed sequence, with each step linked to a vow or shared wish. Depending on the regional tradition, the vows may concern nourishment, strength, prosperity, family, health, friendship, and lifelong companionship.
Saptapadi is one of the best-known rites of a Hindu wedding, but its exact performance varies among communities. Some couples walk around the fire seven times, while others take seven symbolic steps in a line or beside the fire.
It should not be confused with the exchange of flower garlands, the tying of a mangalsutra, or the application of sindoor. Those are separate Hindu wedding customs.
