In a traditional Chinese wedding, the character 囍 represents double happiness.
Known in Mandarin as shuāngxǐ, 囍 is a graphic made by writing the character 喜, meaning happiness or joy, twice side by side. It is strongly associated with weddings and is displayed on invitations, decorations, red envelopes, candles, and bridal-room furnishings.
The character is especially recognizable because its doubled form creates a symmetrical design. Red and gold are frequently used with it, reflecting auspicious color symbolism in Chinese celebrations.
Shuang xi is not a separate ordinary Chinese word for happiness; it is a wedding-associated written symbol. It is also distinct from 福, which commonly represents blessing or good fortune, and 壽, which is associated with longevity. The symbol remains common in Chinese communities worldwide.
