In a quinceañera, how old is the person being celebrated?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday.

The Spanish word quinceañera can refer both to the celebrant and to the celebration itself. The word comes from quince años, meaning “fifteen years.” In many Latin American communities, the birthday marks a symbolic transition from childhood toward young womanhood.

The event commonly combines a family party with formal elements such as special clothing, a ceremonial entrance, dancing, speeches, and sometimes a religious service. Customs vary substantially by country, family, religion, and budget, so there is no single required format.

The celebration is not the same as a legal coming-of-age ceremony. In most places, the person remains legally a minor at age 15. The age is cultural and symbolic, while the legal age of adulthood depends on the country.
