In 2011, Reddit became an independent subsidiary of which Condé Nast parent company?

The story behind the answer

In 2011, Reddit became an independent subsidiary of Advance Publications, Condé Nast’s parent company.

Reddit was acquired by Condé Nast in 2006, when the young site was still a small and rapidly growing online community. For several years it operated within Condé Nast’s digital structure. As Reddit expanded, that arrangement became less practical for a company with its own engineering needs, culture, and ambitions.

In September 2011, Reddit was reorganized as Reddit, Inc., a standalone, wholly owned subsidiary. The move gave Reddit more operational independence while keeping ownership with Advance Publications, the media company that also owned Condé Nast. This was not the same as becoming an independent, unaffiliated company.

The timing can cause confusion because Reddit’s corporate structure changed again later. In 2012, it was reincorporated with its own board and greater control over finances, and outside investment followed. Advance remained a major shareholder. Thus, News Corp, Gannett, and Hearst Communications are not the answers: the relevant parent company was Advance Publications.
