How wide is a singles tennis court?

The story behind the answer

How wide is a singles tennis court? 27 feet. Under the standard tennis-court dimensions, the playing area between the singles sidelines is 27 feet, or 8.23 meters, wide.

A regulation court is 78 feet long. For doubles, the court uses the wider outside sidelines and measures 36 feet across, or 10.97 meters. Those extra 9 feet create the doubles alleys, which are in play for doubles matches but out in singles.

The 21-foot option is another tennis measurement that often causes confusion: it is the distance from the net to each service line, so it describes the depth of a service box rather than the court’s width. Court measurements are taken to the outside edges of the lines, an important detail because the lines themselves form part of the playing area.

The same dimensions apply regardless of whether a match is played on grass, clay or hard court. Surface affects speed and bounce, but not the official size of the court.
