How tall was the main concrete segment of the Berlin Wall?

The story behind the answer

The main concrete segment of the Berlin Wall was about 3.6 metres tall.

The standard concrete slabs used in the later wall system stood roughly 3.6 metres high and were topped with a smooth cylindrical pipe. This design made the barrier difficult to climb and helped create the stark appearance most associated with the Berlin Wall.

The visible concrete barrier was only one element of a much larger border installation. On the eastern side, the system included a patrol road, fences, lighting, watchtowers, trenches, and a cleared “death strip.” Conditions varied along the frontier, so not every section looked identical.

The wall’s height is sometimes confused with the total depth of the border zone or with the height of watchtowers. Those were separate measurements. The concrete wall itself was engineered as a major obstacle, but the layered security system made crossing even more difficult.
