The Gateway Arch, the centerpiece of Gateway Arch National Park, is 630 feet tall.
The stainless-steel arch stands beside the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri. Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen designed it as a monument to westward expansion and the history of the United States.
Construction began in 1963 and ended in 1965. The arch is also 630 feet wide at its base, giving it a nearly equal height and width. A tram carries visitors to an observation area near the top.
The site began as Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in 1935 and was redesignated Gateway Arch National Park in 2018. The park also includes the Old Courthouse, associated with the Dred Scott case.
