How tall is Mongolia's equestrian statue of Genghis Khan?

The story behind the answer

Mongolia’s equestrian statue of Genghis Khan is 40 metres tall. The stainless-steel monument stands at Tsonjin Boldog, about 54 kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar, and depicts Genghis Khan on horseback.

The statue forms the centrepiece of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, whose base is a visitor centre. The complex is about 10 metres high and is supported by 36 columns, symbolizing the 36 khans traditionally counted from Genghis Khan to Ligdan Khan. Visitors can walk through the horse’s chest and neck to reach a viewing platform near its head.

The monument was designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal and opened in 2008, marking the 800th anniversary of the Mongol Empire’s foundation. It is often described as the world’s tallest equestrian statue. A common mix-up is to confuse the statue’s 40-metre height with the complex beneath it, or with other giant monuments that measure more than 50 metres. The quiz answer refers to the horse-and-rider sculpture itself.
