How old is James in the story told by Taylor Swift's song “august”?

James is 17 years old in the story told by Taylor Swift’s song “august.”

The lyric narrative follows a short summer romance between James and Augustine. James later turns back toward Betty, making “august” one perspective in a larger fictional love triangle on Folklore.

The age detail is easy to overlook because the song focuses more on memory, longing, and the temporary nature of the relationship than on exposition. It becomes clearer when the three connected songs are read together: “cardigan” centers Betty, “betty” centers James, and “august” centers Augustine.

James’s age should not be confused with Taylor Swift’s age when the song was released. Swift was born in 1989, while Folklore arrived in 2020. The character’s age belongs to the fictional story world created for the album, not to a biographical claim about Swift or a real person.
