James is 17 years old in the fictional story linked to Taylor Swift’s “august.”
The character appears across the interconnected Folklore songs “august,” “Cardigan,” and “Betty.” James is Betty’s boyfriend and becomes involved in a brief summer romance with the unnamed narrator heard in “august.”
The age is stated in the wider narrative surrounding the songs and is especially relevant to understanding “Betty,” which is narrated from James’s point of view. The songs use teenage memories and summer imagery to create a deliberately nostalgic setting.
A common mistake is treating James as a real person from Swift’s biography. Swift presented the Folklore characters as fictional creations developed during a period when her imagination was “running wild.”
