How old is James in Taylor Swift's Folklore story involving “august”?

James is 17 years old in Taylor Swift’s Folklore story involving “august.”

Swift described James as a 17-year-old boy in the connected narrative formed by “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Betty.” In “August,” he spends part of the summer with the unnamed narrator, even though he is already involved with Betty. The romance is temporary, and James ultimately returns to Betty.

The age is especially relevant to “Betty,” which is written from James’s perspective as he tries to apologize after cheating. Swift’s description clarified the character’s identity after some listeners debated how to interpret the song’s deliberately fictional and ambiguous storytelling.

This detail should not be confused with Taylor Swift’s age when Folklore was released. Swift was 30 in 2020, while James is a fictional teenager. The songs are character studies rather than direct accounts of Swift’s own teenage life, a distinction that reflects Folklore’s broader interest in invented stories and imagined histories.
