Bilbo Baggins is 111 years old when he celebrates his famous birthday in Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories.
Bilbo’s birthday party opens The Fellowship of the Ring, where he marks his 111th birthday with a large celebration in Hobbiton. The event is also important because Bilbo announces that he is leaving the Shire and passes the One Ring to Frodo Baggins.
Bilbo had already been unusually adventurous for a hobbit. In The Hobbit, he travels with Thorin Oakenshield’s company, encounters Gollum, and takes possession of the Ring. His longevity helps connect the earlier adventure with the later story of Frodo’s quest.
The birthday is sometimes confused with Bilbo’s age when he begins The Hobbit. He is much younger then: the adventure starts in the year 2941 of the Third Age, while the birthday party takes place in 3001. Tolkien also gives Bilbo and Frodo the same birthday, 22 September.
