America250 commemorates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776.
The anniversary is calculated from July 4, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration in Philadelphia. Adding 250 years brings the observance to July 4, 2026.
A 250th anniversary is called a semiquincentennial. The word is less familiar than “centennial” or “bicentennial,” but it precisely describes an interval of 250 years. “America250” provides a shorter, more accessible name for the national commemoration.
The celebration focuses on the founding-era declaration rather than the later ratification of the Constitution or the end of the Revolutionary War. Those events were important milestones, but they occurred in 1787 and 1783, respectively, and therefore do not determine the America250 date.
