America250 is scheduled 250 years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776. Counting forward 250 years brings the anniversary to July 4, 2026, the central date of the America250 commemoration.
The calculation is straightforward, but the event is sometimes described more loosely as the anniversary of the United States itself. The Declaration announced that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as independent states, while the present constitutional government developed later.
The number 250 also explains the event’s formal label, semiquincentennial. The previous major milestone was the bicentennial in 1976, exactly 200 years after 1776. The next centennial milestone after 2026 will be the tricentennial in 2076.
