How many voyages did Columbus make to the Americas?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Columbus made four voyages to the Americas between 1492 and 1504. All four expeditions crossed the Atlantic under the authority and financial sponsorship of the Crown of Castile, represented by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile.

The first voyage, from 1492 to 1493, brought Columbus to islands in the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and Hispaniola. His second voyage, from 1493 to 1496, was a much larger colonizing expedition. The third, from 1498 to 1500, took him to Trinidad and the coast of present-day Venezuela. His fourth and final voyage, from 1502 to 1504, explored parts of Central America and the western Caribbean.

A common mix-up is counting only voyages that reached a mainland coast. Historians count all four authorized transatlantic expeditions, including island landfalls. Columbus never completed a fifth voyage; he died in Spain in 1506, two years after returning from his last expedition.
