How many tracks appeared on the original release of Metallica’s The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

The original release of Metallica’s The Black Album contained 12 tracks.

The sequence begins with “Enter Sandman” and continues through songs including “Sad but True,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “The God That Failed.” The closing track is “My Friend of Misery.”

The 12-song sequence was also divided evenly across the original four-sided vinyl format: tracks 1–3 appeared on side A, 4–6 on side B, 7–9 on side C, and 10–12 on side D. That arrangement gave each vinyl side three songs.

Later anniversary editions expanded the material substantially with demos, live performances, rough mixes, and cover versions. Those expanded packages can therefore contain far more than 12 tracks, but the standard 1991 studio album itself has 12. The number refers to the album’s original song sequence, not every recording issued in anniversary releases.
