Who produced Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album?

The story behind the answer

Bob Rock produced Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album.

Metallica had been impressed by Rock’s work on Mötley Crüe’s 1989 album Dr. Feelgood and hired him for its next record. The partnership changed the band’s studio methods as well as its sound. Rock encouraged the members to record collaboratively, rather than building every part separately.

He also pushed for a more live feeling, clearer vocals, and arrangements that emphasized groove and impact. The sessions were difficult, with frequent disagreements between the producer and the band, but the resulting album became Metallica’s biggest commercial success.

Rock continued working with Metallica on later releases including Load, Reload, Garage Inc., and St. Anger. He also performed bass with the band temporarily after Jason Newsted’s departure, although he did not play bass on the 1991 album.
