How many tonnes of building rubble did Border Troops estimate the Wall demolition produced?

East German Border Troops estimated that demolishing the Berlin Wall produced about 1.7 million tonnes of building rubble.

The figure refers to the official dismantling operation that began on 13 June 1990, rather than only the celebratory chipping and breaking carried out by crowds immediately after the border opened. Demolition started around Bernauer Straße and Berlin’s Mitte district, then spread across the former border installations.

The work involved far more than the familiar concrete wall panels. Crews removed border fences, signal systems, barrier ditches, roads, watchtowers and other military infrastructure. Around 300 East German border guards worked on the operation, later joined by about 600 Bundeswehr pioneers after German reunification in October 1990.

The Wall’s disappearance was therefore a major engineering and clearance project, not a single night of destruction. A frequent mistake is to treat 9 November 1989 as the date when every section vanished. That night brought the effective opening of the border; planned demolition continued through the following years, while selected sections were preserved, sold or transferred to museums and memorials.
