All 13 Thirteen Colonies joined the declaration of American independence in 1776.
The colonies occupied the Atlantic coast of North America and were separately administered under British rule. They were grouped geographically as New England, Middle, and Southern colonies, although their governments and local conditions differed.
The group included New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Georgia was the last of the thirteen to be established, in 1732.
The number 13 is also preserved in early United States symbols, including the original flag’s 13 stars and 13 stripes. The 13 colonies should not be confused with every British colony in North America; places such as Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Florida did not join the new United States.
