How many survivors initially lived after the crash of Flight 815?

The story behind the answer

Initially, 71 survivors lived after the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. The survivors were scattered among the aircraft’s separated sections after the plane broke apart over the mysterious island in the South Pacific.

The number can cause confusion because some summaries count 70 human survivors and Vincent, the dog, while others use “survivors” as a broader total. The commonly cited Lost tally is therefore 71. The crash involved 324 people, making the group of survivors a small fraction of those aboard.

The survivors’ experiences quickly divided them into overlapping groups: the main fuselage survivors, the tail-section survivors, and the pilot from the cockpit section. Characters such as Jack Shephard, Kate Austen, James “Sawyer” Ford, Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, and John Locke became the best-known members of the group, but many unnamed or minor survivors were also present.

This count is different from the later “Oceanic Six,” the name given to the small group publicly believed to have escaped the island. The Oceanic Six were only part of the much larger group that initially survived the crash.
