The Subaru car emblem shows six stars.
The stars represent the Pleiades star cluster, known in Japan as Subaru. The Japanese word can mean “unite,” which suits the company’s corporate history: Subaru became the automobile division of Fuji Heavy Industries after several Japanese companies were brought together.
The emblem uses one large star and five smaller stars arranged within a blue oval. The unequal sizes are part of the badge’s recognizable design; it is not a random collection of identical stars. The Pleiades are also known as the Seven Sisters in Greek mythology, which causes a common mix-up when people count Subaru’s stars.
Although the astronomical cluster contains many more stars than the six shown on the badge, the emblem is a stylized representation rather than a literal star map. Subaru introduced the six-star arrangement in its automotive branding during the 1950s, with later versions refining the oval and colors.
