There are 5 stars on the flag of the Solomon Islands.
The five white, five-pointed stars appear in the blue upper triangle, arranged in an X-like pattern. The flag was adopted on 18 November 1977, shortly before the Solomon Islands became independent from Britain in 1978.
The stars originally represented the five administrative divisions that existed when the design was created: Central, Western, Eastern, Malaita, and Honiara Capital. The country later gained additional provinces, but the flag was not changed, so the five stars no longer correspond one-for-one with the current number of provinces.
A common mix-up is to assume that the stars represent the Southern Cross, as they do on several nearby Pacific flags, including those of Australia and New Zealand. On the Solomon Islands flag, however, the stars specifically originated as symbols of the country’s former provincial divisions. The blue represents water and the Pacific Ocean, green represents land and vegetation, and the yellow diagonal stripe represents sunlight.
