How many special quarter designs are planned for the United States' 250th-anniversary coinage program?

The story behind the answer

Five special quarter designs are planned for the United States' 250th-anniversary coinage program.

The semiquincentennial coinage program covers multiple denominations, including a dime, five quarters, a half dollar, and a dollar. The quarter series gives the Mint several opportunities to represent major people, events, and ideas connected with American history.

The program was authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. That law also authorized the American Women Quarters Program and other future redesigns. The semiquincentennial pieces are therefore part of a broader modern redesign framework, not an isolated commemorative issue.

These coins are different from the 1976 Bicentennial quarter, whose reverse showed a colonial drummer and the dates 1776–1976. The 2026 program uses multiple quarter reverses to mark the 250th anniversary rather than repeating the earlier design.
