How many sons did Jacob have?

Jacob had 12 sons. According to Genesis, his sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.

These twelve sons became the traditional ancestors of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Jacob was later given the name Israel, so the biblical text often refers to him and his descendants using both names. His sons were born to his two wives, Leah and Rachel, and to Rachel’s and Leah’s servants, Bilhah and Zilpah.

The number can cause confusion because Jacob also had daughters. Dinah is the only daughter named in the Genesis narrative, although Genesis refers to other daughters without listing them individually. Jacob also adopted Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, and treated them as tribal ancestors.

In some later tribal reckonings, Joseph’s single inheritance is represented through Ephraim and Manasseh, while Levi’s status differs because the Levites served religious functions rather than receiving a standard territorial allotment.
