How many sons did Genghis Khan have with his wife Börte?

The story behind the answer

Genghis Khan had four sons with his senior wife Börte: Jochi, Chagatai, Ögedei and Tolui. Börte also had five daughters, making nine children in total with Genghis Khan.

These four sons became central to the Mongol Empire’s expansion and succession. Jochi received territories toward the Irtysh River and Siberia; his descendants later ruled the Golden Horde. Chagatai governed lands in Central Asia, which became the Chagatai Khanate. Ögedei succeeded Genghis Khan as Great Khan in 1229, while Tolui received lands near the Altai and became the ancestor of later rulers including Möngke and Kublai.

Jochi’s paternity was questioned because he was born after Börte’s abduction by the Merkit, but Genghis Khan publicly accepted him as his son. That controversy did not prevent Jochi from receiving an important inheritance. The four sons should not be confused with Genghis Khan’s children by other wives.
