Dhritarashtra and Gandhari had 100 sons, collectively known as the Kauravas.
According to the Mahabharata, Gandhari’s unusually long pregnancy ended with a mass of flesh rather than a normal birth. Sage Vyasa divided it into 100 portions and placed them in jars of ghee, where they developed into her sons. Duryodhana was the eldest, followed by Dushasana and the other Kaurava brothers.
Gandhari also had a daughter, Duhsala. Dhritarashtra fathered another son, Yuyutsu, through a maidservant, so some summaries mention more than 100 sons in the wider family. However, the standard answer to the question about Dhritarashtra and Gandhari’s sons is 100.
The Kauravas opposed their cousins, the five Pandavas, and all 100 of Gandhari’s sons died during the Kurukshetra War. The number 101 is therefore a common mix-up: it counts Gandhari’s daughter alongside her sons, not an additional son.
