How many seasons did The West Wing run for?

The story behind the answer

How many seasons did The West Wing run for? It ran for seven seasons.

The political drama premiered on NBC on September 22, 1999, and concluded on May 14, 2006. Its seven-season run followed the fictional two-term presidency of Josiah Bartlet, from the daily work of his senior staff through the election and transition to his successor.

The first four seasons were closely associated with creator Aaron Sorkin, whose writing shaped the show’s fast dialogue and idealistic political storytelling. After Sorkin’s departure, John Wells led the series through its final three seasons. The tone and structure changed, but the story continued to its planned presidential transition.

The series is sometimes described as having 156 episodes, a figure that includes a special episode; standard series listings count 154 regular episodes. That distinction does not change the season total. The seventh and final season moved from Wednesdays to Sundays and focused heavily on the Santos–Vinick presidential campaign.
