Three Rings of Power were made for the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
The three Elven Rings are named Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. They were created by Celebrimbor in Eregion, although Sauron taught the Elven smiths techniques used in making the Rings of Power. Unlike the lesser rings and the rings made for other peoples, the Three were not directly touched by Sauron when they were forged.
Narya was associated with fire, Nenya with water or adamant, and Vilya with air. Their bearers in the later history of Middle-earth included Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond. The Rings helped preserve and protect Elven realms, but their power was bound up with the fate of the One Ring.
Tolkien’s famous distribution is three for Elves, seven for Dwarves, nine for Men, and one ruling Ring for Sauron. The numbers are easy to confuse, especially because the total is nineteen lesser Great Rings plus the One Ring.
